The story goes like this: you come across an advertisement that says “Get free WalMart gift card”. It’s usually a $25 or $50 gift card, not more. The offer’s sales page page that you can get a free gift card when you sign up for a membership club. First month is free and then for each additional month you will be required to pay anywhere between $20 to $50.
The offer also states that you can cancel your membership any time you can still keep your free Wal-Mart gift card. Sounds good, right? At this point, many individuals jump at the chance to get a free gift card and sign up with their credit card details. They sell out their shipping details and wait for the card to come in the mail.

The problem with some of these membership clubs, instead there is telephone number for customer support and no one replies to your e-mails. In addition, you cannot cancel your membership online. So, many people get stuck with a membership that they are not using and they cannot cancel. Sometimes, it even gets worse than that: the free Wal-Mart gift card never comes.

It is important to know that they are honest merchants out there and run perfectly legit businesses and will be happy to give you a free gift card in exchange for giving their product (or service) a try. The question is –

How can you identify a free Wal-Mart gift card scam?

As the old saying goes “you can’t fool all the people all the time”. Consumers report such businesses in detail their experiences in online review sites. So, the first thing to do is run a quick search for the name of the company offering this deal, along with the word “review” and then “scam”.

Keep in mind that sometimes the most relevant results will not be found on the first page so take a quick look at the results in the second and third page as well.
You can also check the Better Business Bureau site for any reports about complaints that were filed against the company offering that is offering you this deal.
If these searches come out clean, there are two options:

  1. This site is legit
  2. This site is new and you cannot know whether it is legit or not

You can quickly answer the question of whether the site is new or not by visiting whois.net and typing the name of the site’s domain. If this domain has only been listed are a couple of months: This is a big warning sign.

However, if the domain is not new and has been owned by the same entity for more than a couple of years, chances are you’re looking at an established business.
At this point, you can take a look around the site to check which ways are available to you to contact customer support.
